Staying out of a Summer Slump!

For many teens, we are now halfway through the season of friends, fun and the sun! Summer is often a time where we tend to become lax and lenient with our time with God. It’s so easy to do with so many other activities on our minds and schedule. But just like every other relationship in our life, we must try to invest and spend time with our Heavenly Father. He wants a relationship with you, but it can’t be one-sided.

I completely understand the problem of getting into a summer slump with my devo. time. I become so consumed with worrying about problems and to-do lists, or spend too much time hanging out with friends or doing extracurricular activities that I lose sight of the most important thing in my life – God. I want to share with you a few things that help me stay committed and intentional about my relationship with my Heavenly Father.

  • Be intentional.

Make it a practice to schedule time with God, otherwise you’ll keep putting it off and never do it at all. I find it works best for me to do my Bible time in the morning during the summer, but if you’re a night owl, set time aside late at night! Do it whenever works best for you, but the key is to make sure to ACTUALLY do it!

  • Stay creative.

Sometimes, we think of spending time with God as repetitive or boring. Try changing it up with new and creative ways to be with Him. You can have your Bible time outside or at a park. You could pray while taking a walk or doing some stretching. Turn on some worship music and have a dance party. Pick a chapter in the Bible and talk about it to yourself out loud (I know, it sounds weird, but I find that the more I talk about the Bible to myself, the more I understand and love it!)

  • Include others.

Sometimes the best way to stay accountable with our devotions is to bring a couple friends along. Set up a weekly time to meet and go over a study plan, Bible verses, or just talk about some things you’ve been learning from God. Not only does this help you stay intentional with your relationship with the Father, but it also gives you a chance to grow and learn together as Jesus-followers where you can discover His incredible kingdom together!

I hope this gives you a few new and creative ideas to stay intentional and passionate about your relationship with God during the rest of the summer. Even though it can be so easy to forget or put off, time with the Father is the most important time we can spend. He loves every moment with us. I encourage you to stay connected and pursue your relationship with Him wholeheartedly. You definitely won’t regret it!

Identity Crisis

Have you ever seen a picture on Instagram and thought, why can’t I be more like her? Why is she so much prettier than me? How come I can’t travel all over the world like she does?I believe these are thoughts we’ve all wrestled with at one time or another.

As women, we are constantly being bombarded with videos and pictures that try to sell us an image, position or personality to attain. The enemy has twisted and used social media to attack the most beautiful and lovely part of God’s creation: women. He hates women so much because he knows we are life-givers and have an enormous capacity for empathy and love. We have the job of carrying on and exemplifying the core of beauty that God created!  Satan absolutely hates women and the love and purpose they bring to the world.

Because of this constant barrage of programming, we question our purpose, second guess ourselves and wonder if anyone truly loves and cares for us. We’ve lost the basic component of our identity. Instead, we look for purpose and worth in a guy, beautiful makeup, a friendship, new hairstyle or whatever the latest trend is. These things are wonderful to have, but we can’t start there. We can’t base our self-worth and identity off of something that isn’t eternal.

We have to start with the Life-Giver, the one who put the universe in motion and created and breathed life into you. What does He say about you? Who did He create you to be? What is His plan for your precious life? Spend some time each day getting to know your Heavenly Father and learn about the goodness He has for you. Quiet your mind so He can share His secrets with you. He wants to impart into your heart the love and peace that He embodies. He wants a friend in you! Isn’t it mind-blowing that the Creator of Heaven and Earth, who spokethe world into existence, wants to have a deep, intentional relationship with us?!

Over the last couple months, I’ve learned the immeasurable value and importance of staying rooted in who you are. We have to go back to the beginning and remind ourselves of who created us and for what purpose. 1 Peter 2:9 says that, “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” My friend, youare God’s chosen, holy possession, born again into royalty! You are His light, shining for all the world to see!

I encourage you to read this verse in 1 Peter every day so you don’t lose sight of the beautiful identity you have as a child of the King of Kings. He loves you and is ready to pour His grace and love into you. You only need to open your heart and receive it.

Pure Beauty Conference – Empowering Girls to believe Truth!

“Last April, I attended an event with my daughters who are ages 15 and 11 called Pure Beauty.  From the moment we sat down at the table, I couldn’t hold in my tears. Neither could the girls.

Macie felt so anxious and nervous being on the young end of a crowd of teens she couldn’t hold back her tears of nervousness. Her anxiety was pegged. We cuddled and it soon passed as she felt so welcomed and included.

I shed tears of joy / sorrow / gratitude / unworthiness at how good our God is to place the three of us there for that day. A much needed day of rest for us.

In April, we were at a peak height of emotion with the divorce details and just ending Maya’s inpatient anorexia treatment and preparing for Jackson’s graduation and recent decision to move to Arizona. Life was on emotional overload.

Maya so very bravely listened and watched as the keynote speaker told her own story of battling eating disorder demons.

At the end, the girls were invited to declare a truth in their life. Maya went up on stage and shared this: “I am not defined by anorexia.” (or something close to those words. I’m not remembering exactly.)

*******sobs, basically, lots of ugly crying**********

My chest is tightening up as I remember the moments.

Young women mentors laid hands on and prayed over my daughters and I so fervently. It was one of those moments that you just stop time and feel the literal presence of the Holy Spirit acting all around you.

I was consumed with the need to help this brand, this small ministry that needed to reach MORE young girls and trusted that in His time, we could make that happen.

I have had the privilege to work with Pam Lozano and Pure Design this year to launch some amazing products online.  This year’s Pure Beauty Conference is coming up again – I’d highly recommend it.”

Mistaken Identity

Where do you find your identity and self worth?

Is it in how you look, who you know or who you date?

A lot of times as teenage girls, rather than looking to God – the one who made us and knows us inside and out – we look around us to what we physically see and who we know. We look in the mirror, we ask friends, we search social media, we find a guy. But all of these things are really shallow. Social media changes by the second. What’s in today is out tomorrow. Friends come and go, boyfriends disappoint. And when we anchor our self-worth or our identity to these things, we are in for a lot of disappointment and heartache.

The definition of identity is who you truly are on the inside. It has nothing to do with anything external.

The perfect scripture to sum this up is: 1 Samuel 16:7b says – “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

So how do you know if you are dealing with “mistaken identity”?  Take a look at what we usually value more than what’s happening on the inside of us:  (The inside is where our true identity lies).

  1. Your self-worth comes from your Appearance.

Do you care more about what you look like, than how you act?

Our society values appearance. Teen girls everywhere idolize women like Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, and Emma Roberts. They are envied because of their looks, followers and popularity. But their public lives are only a piece of their real lives. What we see on billboards, magazines, social media and TV are the images their publicists want everyone to see – modified, edited, photoshopped images that create a reality for girls to envy and look up to. Every once in awhile we hear what they are really going through, but quickly those things are swept aside, so you can focus on the surface things like what they are wearing or what hairstyle or make-up brand they use.

Proverbs 31:30 – “Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

Do you know any women who really fear the Lord? Maybe you should follow their lives a little more closely?

  1. Your identity comes from who you know.

From the time we are little, we understand the social system of popularity.  We create categories and try to identify where we fit best.  Our identities are formed by those we hang with – the athletes, the preppy kids, the nerds, etc. –  and from a very young age, we believe our identity is defined by who we know. But, when we try to find our value in the friends we hang with or if our identity is wrapped up in that, we become devastated when relationships fall apart.

As teen girls, we often get caught in the trap of comparing ourselves with other girlfriends.  We compare our looks, talents and abilities with those we hang with.  It creates a feeling of “I’m not good enough because everyone around me is prettier, smarter or more talented.”

The truth is: Our value does come from someone we know, and that person is Jesus.  Think about this for a second: you have been invited to have a personal relationship with God – the creator of the universe. What greater relationship could there be on the planet?

  1. Your worth comes from a boyfriend.

A lot of times as girls, we find our identities in who we date. We think that we need a guy to tell us we are beautiful and loved, rather than knowing we are absolutely adored by God.

A lot of times, the way we feel about ourselves totally depends on whether we are noticed in a room, or get enough social media likes on a post. Our value and worth is dependent on how guys treat us on any given day. If we are noticed or complimented, it’s a good day. If we are ignored, it’s a terrible day and we feel awful about ourselves.

Guys cannot determine your value or worth. Jesus did that when He died for you. He proved that you are so precious and valuable – valuable enough to DIE for. Relationships are fragile, and change and if your value is based on the guy you are with, as soon as that relationship ends, your self-worth will be shattered. You have to know who you are and who you belong to in order to remain secure in your identity.

Isaiah 43:1 says – Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.  (This is what God says about you.)

THIS is the place of secure identity – the place of knowing we belong to God.

So I’d encourage you today – don’t base your identity on things like your appearance, your group of friends or having a boyfriend. Let your true identity come from knowing you belong to God and that He absolutely adores you – just the way you are!

Attitude of Gratitude

During November, a lot of people do these posts on gratitude. You may think, oh another year, another list of things to be grateful for, blah, blah. What’s the big deal?

Well for me, it helps shift my perspective!

A lot of times I get caught up comparing myself to other moms. I look at my friend’s posts on Instagram and think, they have a better life than me! I love their house, their clothes, their new shoes, their make-up, that great bag! I envy their vacation spots and wish I had their life.  You know what’s crazy though? They are probably doing the same thing with my posts!

The Bible talks about gratitude as an attitude of our hearts.  Giving thanks for what we have is so important, because it changes our perspective. Did you ever stop to think, you don’t envy people who have less than you, you envy those who have more.  I Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Rejoice always? Pray continually? Give thanks always? Those are some pretty hard words to live out!

Several years ago, I had the privilege to travel to Tijuana, Mexico on a mission’s trip with a group of teens we were leading. One afternoon we traveled up the side of a windy mountain to a village to share the gospel with people who lived there. When I got there, I was shocked at the level of poverty. The people who hosted the trip tried to prepare us, but until you see things up close, in person, it just isn’t real. There was no running water and no bathrooms, it was crazy!

A woman in the village invited us into her home. As part of our team crammed into her tiny one-room house, my heart sank. Her entire family shared this space that was probably the size of our guest bedroom (which isn’t very big). The floors were dirt, the roof was a piece of tin literally held down by tires and the walls were a mud-like mixture. A very thin, dirty mattress laid on the ground with a blanket. Thin pieces of cloth that covered the “windows” waved in the breeze. There were no screens or glass, just openings with this flimsy fabric covering them. A small table sat in one corner that was their kitchen. A pot with some boiling water sat on the tiniest stove-like structure I had ever seen. I don’t know if they had to buy the water or fetch it from a well or spring, because again, there wasn’t running water in the village anywhere.

The woman invited us in with the biggest smile on her face. She wasn’t ashamed of how little she had, she was gratefulfor the Americans who had traveled to her village to share the love of Jesus. I was amazed in the middle of her lack, she was so joyful.

There is no way I could compare her life to mine. Her house fits into my guest room. Her belongings were old and tattered. They had very few clothes, no closet, no dresser, no extra shoes. Her family members didn’t have their own rooms, in fact, they didn’t even have their own beds – they shared one mattress on the ground. There is just no comparison of her life and mine. But if I had to measure her joy and contentment, I bet she had more joy and was more content than I was. It’s not about how much we own, it’s about being grateful for what we do have.

As I sit at my desk today, Starbucks in hand, typing away on my Mac laptop, surrounded by things I love – a scented candle, a gold embossed mug, books, family photos, inspirational quotes, Bibles and journals, I am reminded how good I really have it.

I am healthy. I am loved by God and friends and family. I live in beautiful home and am warm. I am able to do things in my life that I love. I have money in our bank account, more shoes than I need, clothes I never wear and many, many things I take for granted.

I’d encourage you throughout November to look at what you have in life, rather than what you don’t. A change in perspective helps you see how blessed you are. If you dare, take the 30-day challenge and write down at least one thing you are grateful for every day this month. (If you start today, list 2! J)

Leave a comment here on our blog, or take a second to post on Instagram or FB.  Take the 30-day challenge! I dare you!

The Way to Your Healthiest Body

How Jesus became the best personal trainer I’ve ever Had

“What is healthy? “These verses are life savers! Literally. They are so powerful for our spiritual lives first, then our physical lives. They combat mainly against daily struggles of poor self-esteem, body image and even self-hatred. But they can be used to help build a healthier lifestyle.

Whether we realize it or not, health fitness and wellness can affect our moods, emotions and bodies. But often we do not make time for it in our very busy lives.  Questions such as “What can I do to keep my mental, physical and spiritual life in control going forward?  “I have to give up what!?” And my favorite “I just don’t have time!” circle a young woman’s mind a little more than necessary.

We end up being exhausted from working out extremely hard one day trying to change our bodies overnight, then we eat a slice of pizza and don’t work out for another 3 weeks.  We find it impossible to change these cycles we have been in for years! Here’s a bit of my personal testimony.  During my sophomore year in college, August 2015-May 2016, I gained 30 pounds of bad fat due to stress, very poor eating and a lack of sleep.  It was the first time I stopped doing Varsity Sports since middle school and I had less time to focus on my relationship with Jesus.

2014: working out, eating well and current in my walk with the Lord.

2015-2016: not working out and not eating right:

But I found it all was all rooted from a deeper place where I needed inner healing. These outward habits were just the symptoms that were manifesting from the inside out. I had a fear of type 1 diabetes and was in a toxic relationship. I was not spending time in the Word but in the world and the farther I got away from Jesus, the unhealthier I became.  I used to make my workouts and runs part of my spiritual time with Jesus, but when life became hard I avoided my “Holy runs” and quiet time with Him all together because of shame and pride.  On top of all of this, I began dealing with intense depression.  Thankfully Jesus stepped in and rescued me from all of it!  It was only as I turned to Jesus, that I began walking on the right path again.  Here’s how he helped me do it!

1. Intense Focus from Unseen to Seen NOT OUTSIDE IN:

The desire to change didn’t come from the outside but from within. When I started my journey the right way I had to ask, “why do I want to change and who do I want to change for?” The Holy Spirit guided me to read 1 Peter 3:4 along with the other verses listed above -“but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.”  I also read about Ruth, Deborah and Esther.

I encourage you to read scriptures about what Jesus says about these women and you. Every woman must know how you are to be loved as Jesus loves the church – Ephesians 5:25. You are a Sharon rose and a lily of the valley. – Song of Solomon 2:1.  You are wonderfully and fearfully made. – Psalm 139:14. Your body is a holy temple of God – 1 Corinthians 6:19.

When I started reading these scriptures before my workouts, I was not so tempted to break my 2-week cleanses or fast or sin with my body.

These scriptures gave me strength. Jesus was my biggest coach and supporter in the start back to a healthy life. Through reading the scriptures, praying and with tears, He encouraged me to fight when insecurities of the past or not achieving my goal came up. Jesus always calls us higher and healthier but not just for ourselves but to help others overcome as well.

2. Be inspired by others, but don’t compare yourself to them:

When I approached my fitness, diet and exercise changes at first, I did it the absolute wrong way for the wrong reasons.

The first way was the worldly way, I kept striving and fighting out of my own wisdom, through Instagram, and the worlds versions of a “perfect woman” and ended up very insecure and even more broken. Although I had the best body I ever had and lost the weight, I ended up in a pool of confusion and tears where working out and comparison became an Idol, and I was even worse off then where I started.

2016-2017: I forced my body to be shaped through 7 hours of workouts a week. I formed my body how the world wanted it to be. I was the most lost in this time of my life.

3. Trust the process, be content, rest and don’t return to your old ways:

When we do it God’s way which is to come to Him and simply rest at His feet we can do all things.  Eating more veggies and fruits and drinking more water may not taste or feel great at first but then you notice your clear skin, higher energy levels and an ability to take that extra class this summer or tumble harder in your cheer camp. You’ll breathe better, and look better, but it will be from the inside-out!

Sleep is so important. But I’m referring to an ability to rest in his love and spend time with Him. This  gives you true beauty. Rest and you will be radiant.

Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to me all who are burdened and heavy laden and I will give you rest.  Isaiah 40:31 says, “I will mount you on wings like eagles.” And Exodus 15:2 says “The Lord is my strength and my song he has become my salvation He is my God and I will praise Him.”

You can trust that God will be with you on your runs. He will be with you in every rock climb. Every lift, every dance and cardio workout. He will be there with you when you say no to the binge eating and cycles that are bad for you.

When you feel like giving up Jesus is right there and the Holy Spirit within you will give strength to your mortal bodies.

God bless you my sisters! Let’s endure till the very end!

Today I am healthy and in love with Jesus!  I am doing health the right way – spiritually first, physically second.  I work out 3 days a week and eat right – life is in balance!

1 Timothy 4:7-8 – “Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”

1Corinthians6:19 -20 “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So, glorify God in your body.”

With Love Botanicals Blog

Hello lovelies! Today I want to take a couple minutes to share with you some amazing all natural products that we discovered! For all my beauty babes and gurus out there, these products are not only beneficial to your skin and overall health, but they also smell amazing and help instill a natural glow that lasts all day! Let’s jump in!

First off, these products are from the first launch of the With Love Botanicals line by Keely Dolan, a Seattle, Washington based blogger babe! All three products are made by Keely with hand-picked ingredients like rose quartz, coconut water, aloe vera and others to help moisturize and heal your skin!

The first product of her line, the Goddess Mist, is my personal favorite! It’s a rose quartz infused, rose water facial glow mist! This little glass bottle is MAGIC! From the first use, your skin feels refreshed and you get that instant highlight and natural glow! This bottle is perfect for on the go use or at home for an everyday routine! Benefits from this mist include pH balancing of the skin, hydration, minimization for pores or acne scars, and soothing of irritation or redness of the face. If you’re looking for a product that not only gives you a glow, but also keeps you moisturized while out in the sun, this bottle is for YOU!

Second, we have the Rosy Glow Spray! This baby is another miracle worker! For years I have tried several big name products to help set my makeup in place, but I end up feeling like my makeup is caked on, my face looks too matte, or my skin looks too dry! Gross! After only one day of using this setting spray I am happy to report that this product really works! It refreshed and moisturized, kept my foundation and full face makeup looking fresh, and lasted over nine hours from work to an evening out with friends! The best part is there’s only THREE ingredients: rose quartz, rose water, and aloe vera! Could it get any simpler?! Benefits include lowering stress, soothing itchy or irritated skin, hydration, and maintaining pH!

The third and final product from this line is the Pink Love Salts! This is a pink Himalayan bath salt mix infused with rose & lavender! If you’re like me, after a long crazy week, you’re ready for a little bit of pampering! Even in the summertime, my go-to is drawing a bath and playing some classic hits like my girls Aretha Franklin and Etta James! This bath salt mix is made of Pink Himalayan salt, epsom salt, dried rose petals, dried rose buds, lavender and rose fragrance oil! After two baths, my skin saw major results in healing of back acne, body acne and scars! This mix isn’t particularly for acne problems, but because the ingredients are all natural they have made a huge difference to my skin!

All in all, these products are the BOMB.COM! If you’re someone who doesn’t have a big beauty routine, these babies will help your skin and enhance your natural glow! (pictured on sides) If you are into the full face makeup, these work for you too! They not only heal your skin, but also help set your makeup in place and last ALL day! You can order them today at www.withlovekeely.com!
