Mistaken Identity

Where do you find your identity and self worth?

Is it in how you look, who you know or who you date?

A lot of times as teenage girls, rather than looking to God – the one who made us and knows us inside and out – we look around us to what we physically see and who we know. We look in the mirror, we ask friends, we search social media, we find a guy. But all of these things are really shallow. Social media changes by the second. What’s in today is out tomorrow. Friends come and go, boyfriends disappoint. And when we anchor our self-worth or our identity to these things, we are in for a lot of disappointment and heartache.

The definition of identity is who you truly are on the inside. It has nothing to do with anything external.

The perfect scripture to sum this up is: 1 Samuel 16:7b says – “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

So how do you know if you are dealing with “mistaken identity”?  Take a look at what we usually value more than what’s happening on the inside of us:  (The inside is where our true identity lies).

  1. Your self-worth comes from your Appearance.

Do you care more about what you look like, than how you act?

Our society values appearance. Teen girls everywhere idolize women like Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, and Emma Roberts. They are envied because of their looks, followers and popularity. But their public lives are only a piece of their real lives. What we see on billboards, magazines, social media and TV are the images their publicists want everyone to see – modified, edited, photoshopped images that create a reality for girls to envy and look up to. Every once in awhile we hear what they are really going through, but quickly those things are swept aside, so you can focus on the surface things like what they are wearing or what hairstyle or make-up brand they use.

Proverbs 31:30 – “Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

Do you know any women who really fear the Lord? Maybe you should follow their lives a little more closely?

  1. Your identity comes from who you know.

From the time we are little, we understand the social system of popularity.  We create categories and try to identify where we fit best.  Our identities are formed by those we hang with – the athletes, the preppy kids, the nerds, etc. –  and from a very young age, we believe our identity is defined by who we know. But, when we try to find our value in the friends we hang with or if our identity is wrapped up in that, we become devastated when relationships fall apart.

As teen girls, we often get caught in the trap of comparing ourselves with other girlfriends.  We compare our looks, talents and abilities with those we hang with.  It creates a feeling of “I’m not good enough because everyone around me is prettier, smarter or more talented.”

The truth is: Our value does come from someone we know, and that person is Jesus.  Think about this for a second: you have been invited to have a personal relationship with God – the creator of the universe. What greater relationship could there be on the planet?

  1. Your worth comes from a boyfriend.

A lot of times as girls, we find our identities in who we date. We think that we need a guy to tell us we are beautiful and loved, rather than knowing we are absolutely adored by God.

A lot of times, the way we feel about ourselves totally depends on whether we are noticed in a room, or get enough social media likes on a post. Our value and worth is dependent on how guys treat us on any given day. If we are noticed or complimented, it’s a good day. If we are ignored, it’s a terrible day and we feel awful about ourselves.

Guys cannot determine your value or worth. Jesus did that when He died for you. He proved that you are so precious and valuable – valuable enough to DIE for. Relationships are fragile, and change and if your value is based on the guy you are with, as soon as that relationship ends, your self-worth will be shattered. You have to know who you are and who you belong to in order to remain secure in your identity.

Isaiah 43:1 says – Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.  (This is what God says about you.)

THIS is the place of secure identity – the place of knowing we belong to God.

So I’d encourage you today – don’t base your identity on things like your appearance, your group of friends or having a boyfriend. Let your true identity come from knowing you belong to God and that He absolutely adores you – just the way you are!

The Way to Your Healthiest Body

How Jesus became the best personal trainer I’ve ever Had

“What is healthy? “These verses are life savers! Literally. They are so powerful for our spiritual lives first, then our physical lives. They combat mainly against daily struggles of poor self-esteem, body image and even self-hatred. But they can be used to help build a healthier lifestyle.

Whether we realize it or not, health fitness and wellness can affect our moods, emotions and bodies. But often we do not make time for it in our very busy lives.  Questions such as “What can I do to keep my mental, physical and spiritual life in control going forward?  “I have to give up what!?” And my favorite “I just don’t have time!” circle a young woman’s mind a little more than necessary.

We end up being exhausted from working out extremely hard one day trying to change our bodies overnight, then we eat a slice of pizza and don’t work out for another 3 weeks.  We find it impossible to change these cycles we have been in for years! Here’s a bit of my personal testimony.  During my sophomore year in college, August 2015-May 2016, I gained 30 pounds of bad fat due to stress, very poor eating and a lack of sleep.  It was the first time I stopped doing Varsity Sports since middle school and I had less time to focus on my relationship with Jesus.

2014: working out, eating well and current in my walk with the Lord.

2015-2016: not working out and not eating right:

But I found it all was all rooted from a deeper place where I needed inner healing. These outward habits were just the symptoms that were manifesting from the inside out. I had a fear of type 1 diabetes and was in a toxic relationship. I was not spending time in the Word but in the world and the farther I got away from Jesus, the unhealthier I became.  I used to make my workouts and runs part of my spiritual time with Jesus, but when life became hard I avoided my “Holy runs” and quiet time with Him all together because of shame and pride.  On top of all of this, I began dealing with intense depression.  Thankfully Jesus stepped in and rescued me from all of it!  It was only as I turned to Jesus, that I began walking on the right path again.  Here’s how he helped me do it!

STEPS TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE:

1. Intense Focus from Unseen to Seen NOT OUTSIDE IN:

The desire to change didn’t come from the outside but from within. When I started my journey the right way I had to ask, “why do I want to change and who do I want to change for?” The Holy Spirit guided me to read 1 Peter 3:4 along with the other verses listed above -“but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.”  I also read about Ruth, Deborah and Esther.

I encourage you to read scriptures about what Jesus says about these women and you. Every woman must know how you are to be loved as Jesus loves the church – Ephesians 5:25. You are a Sharon rose and a lily of the valley. – Song of Solomon 2:1.  You are wonderfully and fearfully made. – Psalm 139:14. Your body is a holy temple of God – 1 Corinthians 6:19.

When I started reading these scriptures before my workouts, I was not so tempted to break my 2-week cleanses or fast or sin with my body.

These scriptures gave me strength. Jesus was my biggest coach and supporter in the start back to a healthy life. Through reading the scriptures, praying and with tears, He encouraged me to fight when insecurities of the past or not achieving my goal came up. Jesus always calls us higher and healthier but not just for ourselves but to help others overcome as well.

2. Be inspired by others, but don’t compare yourself to them:

When I approached my fitness, diet and exercise changes at first, I did it the absolute wrong way for the wrong reasons.

The first way was the worldly way, I kept striving and fighting out of my own wisdom, through Instagram, and the worlds versions of a “perfect woman” and ended up very insecure and even more broken. Although I had the best body I ever had and lost the weight, I ended up in a pool of confusion and tears where working out and comparison became an Idol, and I was even worse off then where I started.

2016-2017: I forced my body to be shaped through 7 hours of workouts a week. I formed my body how the world wanted it to be. I was the most lost in this time of my life.

3. Trust the process, be content, rest and don’t return to your old ways:

When we do it God’s way which is to come to Him and simply rest at His feet we can do all things.  Eating more veggies and fruits and drinking more water may not taste or feel great at first but then you notice your clear skin, higher energy levels and an ability to take that extra class this summer or tumble harder in your cheer camp. You’ll breathe better, and look better, but it will be from the inside-out!

Sleep is so important. But I’m referring to an ability to rest in his love and spend time with Him. This  gives you true beauty. Rest and you will be radiant.

Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to me all who are burdened and heavy laden and I will give you rest.  Isaiah 40:31 says, “I will mount you on wings like eagles.” And Exodus 15:2 says “The Lord is my strength and my song he has become my salvation He is my God and I will praise Him.”

You can trust that God will be with you on your runs. He will be with you in every rock climb. Every lift, every dance and cardio workout. He will be there with you when you say no to the binge eating and cycles that are bad for you.

When you feel like giving up Jesus is right there and the Holy Spirit within you will give strength to your mortal bodies.

God bless you my sisters! Let’s endure till the very end!

Today I am healthy and in love with Jesus!  I am doing health the right way – spiritually first, physically second.  I work out 3 days a week and eat right – life is in balance!

With Love Botanicals Blog

Hello lovelies! Today I want to take a couple minutes to share with you some amazing all natural products that we discovered! For all my beauty babes and gurus out there, these products are not only beneficial to your skin and overall health, but they also smell amazing and help instill a natural glow that lasts all day! Let’s jump in!

First off, these products are from the first launch of the With Love Botanicals line by Keely Dolan, a Seattle, Washington based blogger babe! All three products are made by Keely with hand-picked ingredients like rose quartz, coconut water, aloe vera and others to help moisturize and heal your skin!

The first product of her line, the Goddess Mist, is my personal favorite! It’s a rose quartz infused, rose water facial glow mist! This little glass bottle is MAGIC! From the first use, your skin feels refreshed and you get that instant highlight and natural glow! This bottle is perfect for on the go use or at home for an everyday routine! Benefits from this mist include pH balancing of the skin, hydration, minimization for pores or acne scars, and soothing of irritation or redness of the face. If you’re looking for a product that not only gives you a glow, but also keeps you moisturized while out in the sun, this bottle is for YOU!

Second, we have the Rosy Glow Spray! This baby is another miracle worker! For years I have tried several big name products to help set my makeup in place, but I end up feeling like my makeup is caked on, my face looks too matte, or my skin looks too dry! Gross! After only one day of using this setting spray I am happy to report that this product really works! It refreshed and moisturized, kept my foundation and full face makeup looking fresh, and lasted over nine hours from work to an evening out with friends! The best part is there’s only THREE ingredients: rose quartz, rose water, and aloe vera! Could it get any simpler?! Benefits include lowering stress, soothing itchy or irritated skin, hydration, and maintaining pH!

The third and final product from this line is the Pink Love Salts! This is a pink Himalayan bath salt mix infused with rose & lavender! If you’re like me, after a long crazy week, you’re ready for a little bit of pampering! Even in the summertime, my go-to is drawing a bath and playing some classic hits like my girls Aretha Franklin and Etta James! This bath salt mix is made of Pink Himalayan salt, epsom salt, dried rose petals, dried rose buds, lavender and rose fragrance oil! After two baths, my skin saw major results in healing of back acne, body acne and scars! This mix isn’t particularly for acne problems, but because the ingredients are all natural they have made a huge difference to my skin!

All in all, these products are the BOMB.COM! If you’re someone who doesn’t have a big beauty routine, these babies will help your skin and enhance your natural glow! (pictured on sides) If you are into the full face makeup, these work for you too! They not only heal your skin, but also help set your makeup in place and last ALL day! You can order them today at www.withlovekeely.com!

Launching a Dream God’s Way

Do you have a great idea that the world is going to love? Have you always wanted to be your own boss? Entrepreneurship may just be the path for you!  Read on for a few things I’ve learned from launching my own business.

#1 – Find Your Launchpad

Your passions are the perfect launchpad for starting a business. Ask yourself two questions: What do I LOVE to do? How could I make money at it?

When I was 17, I loved health and nutrition.  I walked around health food stores looking at all the products and planned my weekly meals using lots of new recipes. The idea came to my mom first.  She said “Isabel, you could make money doing this!!” Fast-forward a year later, I was working full time planning menus, grocery shopping, and cooking for my very own clients!

Don’t feel passionate about anything right now? Use a problem as your launchpad. Billions of successful products and businesses exist today as a result of yesterday’s problems and inconveniences. I always use kitchen tools as an example. Do you find slicing a banana by hand annoying? Go grab the Chef Matic Banana Slicer!  Never have a free hand when headed to the kitchen trash can? Luckily someone invented the hands-free step-on trashcan a while back. Keep a notebook of all the little inconveniences or problems you experience every day, and try to come up with at least 25 good solutions for each of them. Chances are, you may end up with a really successful business idea!

#2 – Team Up with God

We all know when we surrender our thoughts and ideas to God, they flourish.  And when we try to do things in our own strength, things are often sour from the start. Talk to God about your dreams and desires.  Ask Him what he thinks about your business ideas.  If you don’t have any ideas, ask Him to give you one.  He will help you find your launchpad! God put desires in all of our hearts so they may bear fruit. If your dream is to start a business, chances are, God gave you that dream and he’s going to help you achieve it! Submit your desires to Him and let Him lead you.

Starting a business isn’t easy and can be discouraging. In the very beginning of my business, I hardly made any money.  It was almost impossible to imagine that my business would actually be successful someday. When I prayed and asked God if I should keep pursing it, He gave me a vision of a sign that read “Success.” Any time I would get discouraged and pray, I would see that same vision! Now two years later, I have eight employees and we made six figures of income last year! God is always faithful!  He knows the plans He has for you, so trust Him even when you can’t see the big picture!

#3 – Get the Ball Rolling

The first step to people buying your product or paying for your service is visibility.  People have to know your business exists. Social Media is an awesome tool you can use to create awareness and excitement to grow a following. A website is an essential place for people to learn more about what you offer. The most successful form of advertising is word of mouth, so make sure your family, friends, and your friend’s friends know about what you’re doing!

It’s also important to surround yourself with people who support, encourage, and believe in you and your business. This stage can be scary, I know it was for me! Sometimes it’s hard to feel like your business is valid when you don’t have any paying customers yet, but keep pressing on. The success God has for you may look different than you imagined!

Give Thanks

Every year as brightly hued leaves begin to fall, the wind chills to cooler temperatures and pumpkin spice lattes make their rounds, I am reminded that a great season is here. The season of Thanksgiving reminds us to thank the Lord for our blessings. Although the entire day is centered on celebrating God’s gifts in our lives, is it possible that we succumb to the world’s ideals and unintentionally replace our thankfulness with greed?

It is no secret that our world is dominated by greed. Time and time again we see that no matter how much we have, we will never be satisfied until we have a little more. However, this lie holds no weight against the truths of God’s Word. We learn from the Bible that the things of this world will fade away. One day when we face all of eternity, none of the things of the world will matter. On the contrary, eternal lives will matter.

Instead of wanting more this holiday season, let’s take the focus off ourselves, give thanks for the gifts we have, and use them for God’s glory. Let this holiday season be one of giving. Give up your selfish desires and worries and put someone else’s first. Whether you are given the opportunity to help prepare the meal or pray with a family member, make this season about others. Be thankful for what you have been given, but don’t let the gratitude stop at words, allow your grateful heart to influence your actions as well. The Lord promises to answers your prayers, if you pray for opportunities to express your thankfulness (whether through words or actions) He will provide a way. This holiday season allow the Holy Spirit to soften your heart to the world’s hurts and take action through the giving of thanks.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.”

(1 Chronicles 16:34 NIV).

The Source

Last night I had the privilege of speaking to our teen youth group at church.  This blog comes from a portion of what I taught on:

As Christians, our lives should be attractive to those around us.  People should look and see a difference in how we live, act and in what we say.  What they see in us is the evidence of God at work (or not at work) in our lives.

Often, we talk about wanting to be empowered by the Holy Spirit to do the works of the kingdom.  We want to be empowered to heal the sick, preach the gospel, bring deliverance and freedom to others, but we totally forget to engage with Holy Spirit to work on the inner man inside us.

The greatest gauge of whether we are engaged with the work of Holy Spirit in our own personal lives is – do we have the evidence of His fruit in our lives?

Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT) says, “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives:  love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”

The fruit, not the fruits…  all of it, not some.

If we are connected to Jesus as the source and empowered by His Holy Spirit in our lives, not only will we be able to do the works of the Kingdom, but we will have evidence in our lives – in the spiritual fruit we produce.

We will have love for others.

We will have JOY.

We will have an inexplainable inner peace that goes beyond things happening around us.

We will have patience for those we live and work with, go to school with, interact with in the store or on the highway.

We will be kind, not just when we feel like it, but all the time.

We will choose to do what is good.

We will be faithful and loyal to friends, spouses, neighbors and those around us.

We will be gentle.

We will have self-control and live balanced lives directed by the voice of Holy Spirit.

ALL of these are the fruit of the spirit.

It isn’t 9 different fruits to pick and choose from. The fruit of the Spirit is all of these encompassed in one.  Often I pick and choose and as long as I am doing well in most of these areas, I rationalize that my children make me impatient, rather than facing the fact that I have sin issue that needs to be dealt with.

So what happens when anxiety creeps in?

We allow the outside circumstances of life to dictate our inner peace.

What happens when we become depressed?

We allow the lies of the enemy to overshadow the truth and reality of our status as a son or daughter of the King.

What happens when we are unkind?

We allow our flesh and selfishness to overtake the reality of putting others before ourselves and live humbly like Christ.

What happens when we are out of control?

We allow the circumstances of life and our human desires to dictate our choices and often we choose to disobey how Holy Spirit instructs you to live.

The choices often dictate us and how we feel and how we live – the varsity coach that compliments us and pleads to have us on the team, the rehearsal schedules that keep us out every night of the week on top of our work, school and family responsibilities.

How often do we ask Holy Spirit if we should do something before we say yes?

Now, don’t get me wrong, there are valid reasons for us to feel depressed, anxious, sad and upset.  We are human and situations often affect how we feel. I’m not saying we should not have feelings or just sweep them under the carpet and shout, “God is in control”.  However, when this becomes the ongoing status of our lives – depression, anxiety or fear, we are not aligning our soul to the work of Holy Spirit and allowing him to dictate the choices we make.

We have the power of the Holy Spirit living inside of us and if we choose to activate His power, He can help us overcome anxiety or depression. His power can enable us to live a self-controlled life and make wise choices.

Today I want to encourage us to partner with the work of Holy Spirit in our lives, to align our hearts, minds and souls to his gentle whispers.  He will lead and guide us, often we aren’t listening.  We must learn to plug into the source, not only to do the works of the kingdom, but to live as a believer with spiritual fruit that others can be attracted to.

If we would only walk in love, joy and peace – how attractive is peace right now to the world? How priceless is peace in today’s society?

How attractive is kindness and gentleness?

The world will be drawn to us by the spiritual fruit we produce and the evidence of Holy Spirit at work in our lives.
